Well, after much demand I have finally gotten around to re-creating the "Flying Squid Necklace". It is now available to the public [link] . I've made a few stylistic changes, primarily due to the fact that i ran out of the chain i used on the original. I am quite pleased.
"The so called "flying squid" fork necklace is the largest piece of jewelry i have done to date. It is recycled from three antique silverplated forks. This one originally started as one whole fork, similar to my articulated fork necklace, but it somehow transformed into this monstrosity. Although i think it happens to look quite elegant. I wanted to attach several forks and create an extravagant piece. The center fork became an octopod thingy and then the others sort of became wings. so i suppose it's sort of a Chthulhuesque thing now. No matter what i think, it's sure to be a show-stopper. " Please to enjoy.... CommentsLovely, makes me want to read more Lovecraft. And then when I open a Lovecraft book, I want to see this piece. Its a vicious cycle.

Initially I don't think many folks would recognize what this originally was (forks). That's good. It's going to get the viewer thinking about it, asking themselves what *is* it? Or was it?
I find the turned and curled tines to be very organic in nature, almost in a Dali fashion. It juxtaposes the 'soft' curves with the hardness of the metal in a very interesting fashion. The second thing that comes to mind, is something very Cthulian with tentacles!
The matched handles for the rest of the front 'band' of the necklace also supports the flow of the front of the necklace by giving a sense of stiff, solid support from which the central elements just seem to 'drop' and hang around like a monkey's tail around a tree or an octopus limb around something...see? We're back to tentacles again!
I would almost 'see' this being worn with with a sort of retro looking "Little Black Dress" where the dress and other jewelry and accessories would be the supporting cast to this piece. It would certainly create some head turning "wow" factor!
Perhaps a couple of tiny cocktail forks to make complimentary earrings, or baby/tea spoon handles as sleek 'drop' earrings to join that supporting cast?
There are a couple of 'edges' where the tops of the forks and the handles appear that they might want for a bit of rounding and polishing to make the supporting structure flow a bit more fluidly with the curling tines. Not being a metal worker, I can't speak to the ease or difficulty it could entail. (I also don't know from this angle if they'd rub the skin or possibly snag on clothing...)
